Reunion is a four-part revenge thriller told through the unique point of view of a deaf man isolated from society, both physically and emotionally. We meet Brennan, a convicted murderer, as he leaves prison after serving ten years. Upon leaving prison, Brennan has a clear mission: revenge.

Filmed in and around Sheffield, features both British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English.

Creating the score for this story proved to be a great opportunity for composer JEREMY WARMSLEY.

“I was delighted to score the BBC 1 / Warp Films (Adolescence, Submarine) TV series REUNION, a groundbreaking revenge drama about a Deaf man leaving prison determined to right his wrongs. Unique in its bilingual use of English and British Sign Language, scoring this show was a real challenge - there are huge stretches of silence, punctuated by some extremely dramatic moments, so the music always had to be subtle yet effective.”

Embodying the struggle of a man caught between two worlds, Brennan is unable to fully integrate into the hearing world, while shunned by the deaf community. Amidst this isolation, the only hope of redemption and saving Brennan from himself is through rebuilding his relationship with his estranged daughter Carly and finding a way to let go of the past. Will Brennan be consumed by his desire for revenge or take the opportunity for a new life with his daughter?

Further inspiration came from Sheffield’s famous musical artist.

“Instrumentally, I was inspired by the work of Richard Hawley whose original song "Nowhere to Sign My Name" provides the series' theme, with Western-inspired acoustic and slide guitars decorating much of the soundtrack. As the drama develops, so does the score: I used a lap steel with an Ebow to create some of the mysterious drones that can be heard in the more subtle sequences, with melancholic piano and heavy strings providing the intensity. I wanted to avoid a traditional cinematic sound so I recorded almost all the strings myself in my home studio, overdubbing multiple cellos to create an intimidating wall of sound.”

“Violinist Quinta sweetened the session for the more emotional moments, and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders provided some pounding drums for some of the more energetic sequences. Finally I also created some original electronic dance music with a huge, pounding kick drum, to score a Deaf house party.”

Jeremy Warmsley is a songwriter & composer from London. In the 2000s, he recorded two solo albums for Transgressive Records. In 2009 he started the band Summer Camp with Elizabeth Sankey.

He also composes film, TV and game soundtracks, notably for Simon Amstell's Carnage, Minskworks' Jalopy, and the theme song to Ceebeebies/HBOMax animation Love Monster.
